Meet the team: 3 questions with naval engineer Simon van den Berg
Every month we ask 3 questions to a yachting industry professional. This time, we spoke with Simon van den Berg, naval engineer at Mulder Design.
1: How did you get into the yachting industry?
It all started when I was 15. I loved being out on the water with friends and working on my own boat. That passion led me to take a weekend job at a watersports company, where I gained hands-on experience repairing and installing boats. Those early years got me really into the marine world - and I’ve been into it ever since. Over time, this interest evolved into a professional path, supported by technical studies and internships at various shipyards. For me, the blend of engineering, design, and boats has always felt like the perfect combination. What began as a weekend hobby eventually grew into a full-time career.
2: What’s the most challenging aspect of your job?
Turning an idea into a buildable, functional system on a yacht is one of the biggest challenges. It’s a constant balance between form and function — especially when space is limited and expectations are high. Designing elements like telescopic roofs or pantographic doors demands precision and attention to detail, without compromising on usability or aesthetics.
3: What's the best advice you could give to someone new to the industry?
Stay curious. Always ask yourself why something is designed the way it is — and don’t be afraid to ask those questions out loud. Never shy away from making mistakes. In fact, dive into them. Understanding what went wrong is often the most valuable and educational way to grow in this field.
